刚玉的摩式硬度为9，是自然界硬度仅次于钻石的宝石，被称为彩宝之王。纯净的刚玉是纯净无色的，当含有不同微量元素时会呈现不同的颜色。有无色、白、金黄（色素离子Ni、Cr）、黄（色素离子Ni）、红（色素离子Cr）、蓝（色素离子Ti、Fe）、绿（色素离子Co、Ni、V）、紫（Ti、Fe、Cr）、棕、黑（色素离子Fe、Fe）、白炽灯下蓝紫、日光灯下红紫效应（色素离子V）。
